THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has closed 17 bars and revoked their trading licences for poor sanitation.
LCC public relations officer Henry Kapata says the bars, which are located in Emmasdale, Kaunda Square Stage One, and Mtendere, were closed after a massive clean up conducted by the council last week.
Mr Kapata said in an interview on Friday that council swung into action following its findings and reports from the public.
“The bars that had their licences revoked and closed had no running water and had dirty toilets…” he said.
Mr Kapata said anyone selling liquor without a liquor trading licence risks being charged a penalty fee of K75 million or face three years imprisonment.
He said all bars in residential areas that disturb public peace and do not meet the regulations stipulated by the local authority will be visited and inspected with the help of councillors.
Mr Kapata has also warned street vendors selling meat products on the road sides in town because street vending is illegal under Cap 281 of the Local Government Act.
“We don’t want any situation that would compromise public health because such an act is hazardous to public domain,” he said.
He said that the vendors should sell their meat products at designated places.
