A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has died in Namwala after falling off and being run over by an ox-cart he was travelling in with other passengers.
Southern Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said Benny Chizyuka, of Dambwa site-and-service in Livingstone died on the spot on Thursday when he fell off the maize-laden ox-cart when the oxen pulling it strayed into the bush.
Mrs Katanga confirmed yesterday that the accident happened around 17:00 hours in Chief Muchila’s area in Namwala.
She said the ox-cart was transporting passengers from the field.
“The accident happened on May 16, 2013, at 17:00 hours in Shamutiki village. The ox-cart was being pulled by two oxen. The passengers were returning from the field but the oxen suddenly strayed into the bush and the passenger [Benny] fell off and was run over,” Mrs Katanga said.
She said the boy sustained serious injuries and died on the spot.
Mrs Katanga said the body is lying in Macha Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.
And in a separate incident, police in Kazungula have arrested a clinical officer for allegedly stealing six bottles of anti-retroviral drugs.
She said Ephraim Gonah of Kazungula Rural Health Centre was apprehended over the weekend as he tried to sell the drugs.
Mrs Katanga said in an interview in yesterday Mr Gonah, 31, has been detained and charged with theft by public servant.
“Police in Kazungula arrested a clinic officer at Kazungula Rural Health Centre for theft by servant. He allegedly stole six bottles of ARVs.
“The incident happened on Saturday. Police received a report from Kazungula residents who saw Mr Gonah trying to sell the drugs to some pharmacy,” she said.
