A RETIRED Zambia Air Force (ZAF) officer has been shot dead in Mumbwa by his son, who attempted to snatch the father’s car they were travelling in.
Acting police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has identified the deceased as Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Kamuchele, 55, of ZAF base in Mumbwa.
Mr Hamoonga said the incident happened on December 29 last year as Col Kamuchele and his son, Emmanuel, 26, drove from Mumbwa ZAF base to Lusaka for some family business.
He said on their way to Lusaka, Emmanuel asked his father to stop the vehicle so that he could ‘answer the call of nature’.
“He [son] pretended that he wanted to answer the call of nature, so he asked his father to stop the vehicle. The father parked the vehicle at one of the lay-bys along the Lusaka-Mumbwa road.
“Immediately the father stopped, the son produced a loaded pistol and shot him twice in the head and once in the stomach,” Mr Hamoonga said.
He said Emmanuel then dragged the body of his father into the bush and dumped it.
The decomposed body of Col Kamuchele was discovered in the bush by some people, who reported the matter to Mumbwa Police Station.
Mr Hamoonga said after that, Emmanuel drove the vehicle to Lusaka but later abandoned it in town.
He said Emmanuel has been arrested and charged with murder and will appear in court soon.
And Mumbwa district commissioner Sunday Shamabanse said the law must take its course so that other potential offenders can learn.
Mr Shamabanse said he is disappointed and saddened by the manner Col Kamuchele was murdered by his son.
“It is not very easy to bring up a child, now to learn that the son murdered his own father in cold blood is shocking and the law should take its course,” he said.
Mr Shamabanse advised young people to value their parents and other people so that they can contribute meaningfully to the development of the country.
