…says corruption is an obstacle to stability

PRESIDENT Sata has challenged the Zambia Security Intelligence Service (ZSIS) to come up with appropriate strategies to monitor and combat corruption and economic sabotage.
Addressing the ZSIS senior officers’ conference yesterday, President Sata said corruption is an obstacle to national stability and growth.
“The theme for this year’s conference ‘Quality Intelligence: Key to enhanced socio-economic development and the defence of a unitary and corrupt-free state’ is in line with the aspirations of my government,” President Sata said.
This is according to a statement released in Lusaka yesterday by the President’s special assistant for press and public relations, George Chellah.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving living standards of all Zambians in line with the PF manifesto.
President Sata, however, observed that the implementation of development programmes has, in many cases, been undermined by corrupt practices, poor workmanship and intentional delays by contractors.
“The challenge before this conference is, therefore, to come up with appropriate strategies to monitor and negate these and other cases of economic sabotage,” he said.
President Sata said Government appreciates the role the ZSIS has continued to play in maintaining peace and security in the country.
He urged ZSIS officers to be more professional and remain loyal to the government of the day.
“Let me reiterate my government’s commitment to supporting the service in its operations,” he said.
And ZSIS Director General Martin Mwanambale pledged the intelligence service’s full loyalty to the President, the Government and the people of Zambia.
