Dear editor,
I WISH to concur with Dr Mannasseh Phiri on the issue of a serious and well thought-out review of the issue of homosexuality in our country.
Despite one’s standing on this issue, homophobia (hatred for or fear of homosexuals and lesbians) is a cancer that must not be taken lightly as it will only lead to hate and ultimately bloodshed if ignored or encouraged.
Adolf Hitler masterminded the holocaust because he thought Jews were sub-human; Thomas Bagasora and his minions caused the Rwandan genocide because of his hatred of the Tutsi tribe; Nathan Bedford Forest formed the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) because he believed black people (so called niggers) were inferior to the white folk and the xenophobic attacks that occurred a few years in South Africa were caused by the locals believing that foreigners were taking their jobs.
So, what makes homophobia different? Whether we like it or not, gays are and forever will be part of our community, and I believe it is about time we started analysing this sensitive and controversial issue with the utmost objectivity.
ANTI-DISCRIMINATION ADVOCATE,
Lusaka.
