OVER one million mobile phone subscribers have registered their subscriber identification module (SIM) cards since the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) extended the registration exercise to January 31.
As at December 31 last year, 5,360,093 mobile subscribers had registered their SIM cards out of over 10 million subscribers on the three networks – MTN, Airtel and Zamtel.
ZICTA head of information and consumer protection Katwamba Mwansa said in a latest update that over one million mobile subscribers had registered their SIM cards from the time the exercise was extended.
“As at January 15 this year, a total of 6,649,930 SIM cards have been registered against a nationwide mobile subscription base of 10, 343, 527,” Mr Mwansa said in response to a press query.
After January 31, this year, all unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated and service discontinued.
Zamtel, Airtel, and MTN are conducting mobile SIM registration while ZICTA has also been conducting notifications and sensitisation campaigns on the exercise.
A check in the Livingstone central business district yesterday found a sizeable number of mobile subscribers queuing up to have their SIM cards registered.
