THE Zambia Postal Services (Zampost) says it will on June 1 this year start offering payment services for buyers of second hand vehicles from Japan.
Postmaster-general McPherson Chanda announced the development at a press briefing in Ndola on Wednesday.
Mr Chanda said the number of people being swindled by clearing agents will reduce when Zampost starts offering the payment services for buyers of second hand vehicles from Trust Company of Nagoya in Japan.
He is concerned that there have been many complaints through the Zambian High Commission in Tanzania concerning people who have been swindled by clearing agents in that country.
Mr Chanda said people who order cars from Japan will have an option to either make their transaction through Zampost or to pay directly to Japan.
He said the decision by Zampost to start processing transactions for car buyers was made after successful negotiations with Trust Company of Japan.
Mr Chanda said Zampost will act as the sales and collecting agent on behalf of the buyers.
Mr Chanda said customers who choose to pay for their vehicles through Zampost will enjoy a 40 percent discount as compared to the 150 percent they pay through the banks.
He said payments through Zampost will be faster and efficient because the transmission of money for the vehicles will be done within two hours.
Mr Chanda said Zampost was prompted to come up with the facility because most people who are buying cars from Japan do not have bank accounts through which to transfer money.
“The need for cars exists already, people are buying cars but the process is expensive and tedious as it is time consuming. Also, you don’t need to have a bank account to buy a car,” Mr Chanda said.
He said the participation of Zampost will cut out middle men in the transactions and reduce the number of Zambians being swindled by clearing agents in Tanzania.
“Recently, Zambian High Commissioner to Tanzania Judith Kapijimpanga complained about the increasing number of people being swindled by the car agents in that country.
“So, she is hoping that we can move in quickly to assist in the buying and clearing of cars up to Nakonde border,” Mr Chanda said.
