VETERAN broadcaster and singer Charles Muyamwa is dead. He was 69.
This is according to Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Muyeba Chikonde, who said Mr Muyamwa died on Thursday night after an illness.
Mr Muyamwa, whose wife, Patricia, is First Secretary for Tourism at the Zambian High Commission in South Africa, died at Little Company of Mary in Pretoria, where he had been admitted.
Mr Chikonde said the body of the late Mr Muyamwa will be transported to Lusaka on Tuesday next week for final rites.
The late Mr Muyamwa’s career in broadcasting and arts spanned over several years, having trained as a BBC broadcaster and public relations practitioner.
He worked extensively for the Zambia Broadcasting Services (later Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation), rising to the rank of director for programmes, and later public relations manager for the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) Limited.
He was responsible for spotting and recruiting other versatile broadcasters such as Zambian ambassador to Italy Frank Mutubila.
Mr Muyamwa acquired literacy skills through courses with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) among others and has made several audio and video recordings, including Matangu, Lozi Fireside Stories with English subtitles.
Mr Muyamwa also authored two books on Zambian music that have been recommended textbooks by the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) to his credit.
He was also a founder member of the National Arts Council of Zambia.
And Mr Chikonde yesterday led diplomatic staff at the mission to the funeral house.
