THE family of the slain 49-year-old woman of Chazanga Township has accused police officers investigating her murder of being lax in the manner they are following up leads since her death.
The family is also demanding that justice prevails and the case concluded expeditiously so that they can achieve closure on the matter knowing that the perpetrator is behind bars.
Grace Mumba, a mother of six, who was an officer at the Ministry of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, was found dead in her car on Friday, January 17 about two kilometres away from Kabangwe police post.
A grief-stricken mother of the deceased, Helen Nshindano, said it was disheartening that people whose job it is to solve the case are acting indifferently when family members give them leads.
“Grace was my first-born daughter and as a mother, it breaks my heart to imagine the painful way she was murdered. As a family, we want to ensure that the person or persons involved in the brutal murder are brought to book.
This is the reason we have been assisting the police with whatever leads we come across but each time we go to officers at Kabangwe police station, they act indifferently and do not seem interested,” Ms Nshindano said.
She said the only way to put closure to the passing of their relative is by the police putting the culprit or culprits behind bars and justice prevailing so that the people involved do not continue killing people.
She said although post-mortem results are yet to be released, physical evidence reveals she was murdered.
But police spokesperson Charity Munganga said the police are working professionally to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
“We understand that the family is still grieving and would want to ensure that the person they suspect of killing their loved is caged. But we are professionals and follow laid down procedures. Investigating a murder case is not an easy job. as police, we can’t go around arresting every person the family suspects of being involved in the murder,” Ms Chanda said.
She said investigations are still on-going and they have one suspect in police custody. She said the police are on the ground and want to be thorough in their investigations to ensure that the person or persons involved are charged.
