THE Rural Electrification Authority (REA) says that it will spend about K65 million this year for the implementation of rural electrification projects.
REA chief executive officer Geoffrey Musonda said that this year’s projects will focus on completion of grid extension that the authority commenced last year.
Mr Musonda said at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that the projects will include commencement of nine new grid extensions countrywide, among other projects.
“These projects will involve the construction of overhead lines, cable take offs, mounting circuit breakers in health centres, schools in Northern, North-Western, Western, Central, Luapula, Copperbelt, Southern and Lusaka provinces,” he said.
Mr Musonda said that the projects will also include the commencement of the construction of the Kasanjiku mini-hydro power station in Mwinilunga.
He said that the installation of a solar home system (SHS) in 58 schools and 23 rural health centres at a total of K12.2 million will be done this year.
Mr Musonda said that the authority will also implement 164 installations of SHS in Lundazi, Chama, Zambezi and Mwinilunga.
“The implementation of these 164 installations of SHS Sustainable Solar Market Packages programme for 2014 will cost approximately US$1.2 million,” he said.
Mr Musonda said that the installations will include chiefs’ palaces, Zambia Wildlife Authority camps and staff houses, among others.
He said that the projects will also include the construction of the 300-kilowatt Lunga Solar Mini- Grid project in Luapula province.
Mr Musonda also said that REA will construct a 75- kilowatt Chunga Solar mini- hydro project in Chunga area in the Kafue National Park.
