Dear editor,
THE statement by Kenneth Chipungu, the chairperson for elections and Rufunsa MMD member of parliament, that his party has no money to participate in forthcoming by-elections cannot pass without a comment.
MMD is supposed to be our countrys largest opposition party. This is the party that ruled our great nation for 20 straight years and was by far the richest party prior to the 2011 general elections.
MMD put up an extravagant campaign this country has ever seen. We saw MMD purchase light trucks, vans and bicycles which were distributed across the country for mobility during the campaigns ahead of the September 20, 2011 tripartite elections.
Where on earth did the MMD get money from to buy all those trucks and vans for their campaigns? No doubt it was taxpayers money. I mean, if that was not the case, they would not be talking about being bankrupt less than two years in the opposition.
It is quite unfortunate that a party that is supposed to be in the forefront to provide checks and balances to the government of the day cannot even source funds for something like a by-election. This is not good for our young democracy.
MMDs dilemma should be a lesson to all our political parties and especially to those who abuse authority. Let it be known to everyone that you can only stretch as far as your tenure lasts.
