Dear editor,
THE news that appeared on ZNBC TV on 29/05/13 where someone who ran to a police post to seek refuge but was robbed right near the police post without any help from the officers on duty is sad.
This incident is embarrassing to the police service in our country and the world at large. Many questions will arise that require answers from the high command.
During training, officers are always advised to remain extra alert all the time when they are on duty and they are advised to treat anyone at any time as a suspect.
It is unacceptable that someone can be robbed in front of officers where he thought he could get refuge. It is unfortunate that officers can be ordered by bandits to lie down and succeed with their mission.
This reminds me of the late 90s to early 2000s when robberies were the order of the day. During this period, we witnessed quite a number of robberies both in Lusaka and on the Copperbelt.
We saw private companies like Armcor security come into existence with advanced systems, trainings and strategies that helped to curb robberies.
I remember Armcor response teams by then physically challenging criminals armed with AK47s and other sophisticated weapons and they could apprehend and recover the vehicles, firearms and hand over criminals to state police.
Our police officers need proper communication systems for them to curb crime. They need communication radios and they must be armed. If the officers had radios at Manda Hill police post, they could have quickly broadcast the incident and the details of the car the robbers were using and every officer could have been alerted.
MARTIN MUSANKA.
