…rolls out 4,336 houses with more coming
By ALVIN CHIINGA
PRESIDENT Sata says that government constructed and handed over a total of 4,336 medium and low cost houses by December last year.
He says that Government’s progress in the provision of accommodation for Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force and Zambia National Service staff has reached an advanced stage.
Mr Sata said on his Facebook posting yesterday that the Zambia Army L85 had 2,830 housing units, Zambia Air Force Twin Palm had 1,001 housing units, Zambia National Service (ZNS) Makeni had 105 housing units, and Zambia Army Chindwin (Kabwe) had 275 housing units while the Zambia Army Taun Gap (Mufulira) had 125 housing units constructed.
All this is aimed at not only ensuring that the security personnel in Zambia are well accommodated but also to reduce the accommodation strain in the country that has been growing over the past decades as the population grew but not in tandem with decent shelter.
President Sata said in addition to houses, about 77 percent of the works have been done towards the completion of the out-patient and X-ray departments with associated external works at the Northern Command Military Hospital in Ndola.
He said that additional construction of hospitals is currently on-going at the different places countrywide.
The President said the construction of Air Force Hospital at Air Headquarters, construction of a mini-hospital at ZNS Makeni and construction of a clinic at ZNS Munsakamba and Mkushi while there are other construction works of medical stores at Arakan Barracks.
He said that Government will also construct additional housing and rehabilitate the existing infrastructure for the military across the country in line with the PF manifesto.
Zambia’s has seen he largest roll out of infra-structure described by analysts as the largest since independence as roads, airports, universities and even stadiums get erected on Sata’s watch.
The President believes that through construction, he will create jobs and subsequently reduce acute poverty levels that rose under previous administrations largely due to neglect and rampant corruption.
