SEVEN local theatre groups have finally been selected to take part in the April 2014 International Theatre Festival scheduled for the Lusaka Playhouse.
The festival will take place from April 22 to 27.
Yezi-Arts Promotions and Productions chief executive officer Abdon Yezi named the local theatre groups as Chingola Arts Society (Breaking Pot), Mufulira Arts Society (Your Uncle Talks Too Much), ZANASE (Your Sister Talks Too Much) Khomo Lathu, Africa Directions (The Will), Matero Theatre (Town Boy) and Bantu Theatre (The Pastor and the Harlot).
“In 2014, we are going to have 10 groups, of which seven are local and three are international. Earlier, we had hoped to have six groups but this was eventually increased to allow for more local participating groups. As always, it is difficult to make choices on which groups to participate as most of them are enthusiastic and eager to participate,” Yezi said in a statement.
Mwena Mweya, a United States and Zimbabwe collaborative play by EDZAI ISU Theatre Arts Project and Daughters of Yemaya Collective (New York), grows the festival’s international participation while from Malawi, Solomonic Peacocks comes with yet another intriguing story in the play Beyond the Horizon, while Botswana will be participating for the second time in the festival.
“Over the years, we have had very close interactions with colleagues in the sub-region. We are happy that this cultural exchange continues to grow from strength to strength.
“Solomonic Peacocks return to Zambia with …, and will also certainly look forward to identifying a group to participate in the Blantyre Arts Festival. We also have the unique participation of a US-Zimbabwe collaborative play. This means that participation in the festival is growing and going beyond continents,” Yezi said.
