THE Zambia National Service (ZNS) says it has set aside KR1.2 million (K1.2 billion) for the installation of a second centre pivot irrigation system at its Munsakamba Farm in Mkushi.
The installation of the centre pivot irrigation system has boosted wheat production for the ZNS which is expected to increase to 31,000 by 50 kilogramme bags from 25,723 for 2012/13 farming season.
ZNS Lieutenant Colonel Standley Chembe said ZNS is enhancing capacity on irrigation systems to increase production of wheat.
Lt Col. Chembe said during the Copperbelt Agricultural, Mining and Commercial Show in Kitwe that Chanyanya and Mkushi farms will increase production through enhanced irrigation systems.
This year we are putting up a second centre pivot irrigation facility at Munsakamba Farm in Mkushi. The project will cost about K1.2 million, he said.
He said ZNS is expanding towards irrigated agriculture in various units with water systemS.
Lt Col. Chembe said the 290 hecterage for wheat production will be increased to 350 hectares which will result in increased production.
He said wheat is supplied to local millers and Lt Col. Chembe cited APG Milling as one of the major buyers of the cereal.
Demand for the local crop is increasing. We have been selling most of our crop to APG Milling Company, he said.
He said ZNSs mainstay is livestock and crop production, adding that, Our goal is to supply sister services within the security wing and ourselves.
