By KELLY NJOMBO SNV says there is need to establish small-scale milk processing and market facilities for traditional cattle keeping areas to enhance milk production in the country. According to a survey conducted by SNV, most of the milk produced by the milk producers does not enter formal markets due to challenges affecting the sector. SNV says targeting the traditional cattle farming sector in improvement of production and marketing has the potential to increase employment and food security in rural parts of the country. “There is need to establish small-scale milk processing packaging and local marketing facilities in those traditional cattle keeping areas where milk production is good, but accessibility by processors is problematic or economically less viable,” reads the statement. This is according to the SNV magazine on Milk Production and Marketing in key traditional cattle keeping areas in Zambia. SNV conducted the study as part of its efforts to unlock the potential of the livestock sector for economic diversification and poverty reduction. The study also reveals that the cattle industry is one of the important components of the Zambian livestock. “The purpose of the study was to estimate current milk volumes and determine how milk production in the traditional cattle farming sector can yield higher economic returns for farmers,” reads the statement. SNV said there is also need to establish more milk collection and livestock service centres.
