CHISHALA MUSONDA reports:
ZESCO 4 POLICE 1
WINSTON Kalengo fired a brace that lifted Zesco United to the top of the MTN Super Division log in the thrashing of Konkola Mine Police in yesterdays one-sided Week 11 encounter at the giant Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Zesco leap over Nkana to go to 24 points, one better than the Kitwe side that will be in action today against Nkwazi in Lusaka.
Police are in troubled waters at the bottom half of the table.
Kalengo, who played on the right wing from his usual central attacking position, scored twice in the second half to add to Mwape Mwelya and Maybin Mwabas earlier goals.
Jack Mwanzas spectacular overhead kick earned the visitors the consolation.
Police started forcefully and made an attempt at goal 15 seconds from kick-off but it the Zesco who were to dominate and translate their possession into goals.
After an equal exchange in strength in the opening moments of the encounter, Zesco finally broke the ice with an enterprising Mwelwa blasting Zesco into the lead with a scorching shot that gave no chance to Police goalie veteran Evans Chewe before the ball ricocheted off the crossbar twice and crossed the line for the opener.
Police did not sit back. They responded with some quick counter-attack that almost paid off on 35 minutes when striker Mushili Chanda sneaking past Nyambe Mulenga. His tame shot went past Brown Nyirenda but wide off the target.
As Police searched for an equalizer, they were caught on the break with Kangwa Chileshe dispossessing Kabaso Chongo on the right before racing towards goal. He fed Mwanza just outside the box who smashed the ball into the net in the 45th minute.
Zesco returned from the break on top of the game and after some neat exchanges of passes between Mwape and Lottie Phiri, Kalengo found space on the right before rocketing the ball past Chewe on 51 minutes to make it 3-0.
The visiting side gave themselves some hope in 57th minute when Jack Mwanza, a substitute for Harrison Kaonga, was given much time to chest control the ball and volley it into the net to stun the Zesco defence.
Realising Police could stage a comeback, Zesco upped the game. On the right channel Chileshe dodged his marker and his pin-point cross was headed in by Kalengo on 62 minutes.
This deflated Police as Zesco dominated play until the final whistle.
ROAN 0 FOREST 0
At Kafubu Stadium in Luanshya, basement side Forest Rangers were drawing for first time this season as they picked up their fourth point off Roan United.
ARROWS 2 KALULUSHI 0
Lubinda Mundias and Bruce Musakanyas second half goals condemned relegation-threatened Kalulushi Modern Stars to their seventh defeat of the season, VICTOR KUMWENDA reports.
The win pushed Arrows to 16 points with a game in hand against struggling Forest Rangers while Kalulushi remain stuck on 10 points third from the bottom of the log.
Arrows, who initially struggled to break a resolute Kalulushi defence scored the opening on the hour mark through Mundia who stabbed home from close range after latching onto a Stanley Nshimbi cross.
Musakanya doubled the lead on 65 minutes when he fired a low shot from a similar position again after connecting a cross from Nshimbi, who tormented Kalulushi defenders throughout the match.
