Glaring disparity between haves, have-nots

Dear editor,
THE disparity between the rich and the poor in Zambia is evident in Lusakas plush buildings that exude an aura of prosperity that unfortunately evaporates as one travels a few kilometres away from the city centre to reveal thousands of ramshackles in Misisi township.
This sharp contrast between the haves and have-nots in Zambia is something the PF government is concerned about.
But does the elimination of subsidies imply that the government is freeing up more resources to be applied to development programmes that have capacity and potential to facilitate poverty reduction among millions of Zambians?
This would be a socio-economic policy against which President Sata and the PF party could then be judged.
Unless we have class-consciousness, we shall always see issues that are otherwise interconnected as separate.
Mass energies will be expended on partisan demonstrations and student protests that have little broader gain.
Ordinary people die from treatable diseases like malaria because healthcare is not only unreachable but absent in the rural areas. The city slums like Misisi exist, because the poor long left rural areas in search of work, only to become idle reserve labour.
